These are the fines in Spain for drivers stopping in bike lanes
Under the new Traffic Law in Spain, this practice is now considered a serious offence
Since the new Traffic Law came into force in Spain on March 21, 2022, the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has been cracking down particularly on distractions behind the wheel, such as using mobile phones, which can lead to accidents. However, the Traffic authorities are also focused on making the roads safer for cyclists and personal mobility vehicle (VMP) users and have introduced a new sanction.
It’s not uncommon for drivers to temporarily pull over into a bike lane if they can’t find somewhere else to park, but this manoeuvre naturally puts cyclists at risk. As the law stands, cyclists or VMP riders using the bike lane have priority over other vehicles and pedestrians, once they are respecting traffic regulations.
Since the DGT has launched several campaigns to stop cyclists and scooter users from travelling on footpaths and in pedestrian areas, it is anxious to promote the correct use of bike lanes, which themselves have traffic lights and zebra crossings.
Article 76 of the Traffic Law prohibits “stopping or parking in the bus lane, in bicycle lanes or paths, on curves, elevation changes, parking areas for the exclusive use of people with disabilities, tunnels, underpasses, intersections or in any other dangerous place or in which seriously impedes traffic or constitutes a risk to pedestrians”.
Ignoring this rule is now considered a serious offence, and drivers caught stopping or parking in bike lanes will be subject to fines of around 200 euros.
The DGT has also indicated that pedestrians should never use bike lanes to walk.
