This quiet corner of Andalusia is fast becoming a hit with ex-pats buying property in Spain
Known as ‘the Spanish Algarve’, this little-known coastline has all the perks of the Costa del Sol at a fraction of the price

Spain has long been a popular draw for ex-pats from the UK, Ireland, Germany and elsewhere in Europe to purchase property in Spain, who come looking for a warm climate and a good quality of life with better value for money.
However, some parts of the Spanish coast like the Costa del Sol are becoming overcrowded, and this is driving up the price of villas and apartments.
But there’s one part of Spain’s southern Andalusia region that’s still virtually a secret among ex-pat property buyers, although it’s fast becoming an open secret – and for good reason!
Why people are loving Huelva
Huelva, situated on the Costa de la Luz in the far southwestern corner of mainland Spain, right on the Portuguese border, is a sleepy sort of place that has a relaxed atmosphere and still retains all of its traditional Spanish charm.
Although it’s right on the Portuguese border and goes by the name of that country’s most famous
holiday resort (being nicknamed the ‘Spanish Algarve’), the province of Huelva is still not as built up and busy as other areas of Andalusia, and property prices are still enticingly affordable.

“The reason why prices are probably a bit lower than normal is there’s no real international airport, so people either fly into Seville or Faro in Portugal and actually come and enjoy their properties from those directions,” says Nigel Salmon, Managing Director at professional property finder Girasol Homes.
While being this out of the way may be a turn off for some people looking to buy a home in a busier part of Spain, it’s also what makes Huelva such a special and unique spot for anyone looking for a bit of peace and quiet.
“The beaches are pretty deserted – it’s unspoilt,” explains Nigel. “It’s got a lot of history in there too.”
There are historical towns in Huelva like El Rocio and Aracena that you absolutely must visit, and the
natural areas are unlike anywhere else in Spain, with amazing and curious attractions like the Río Tinto – a river that actually runs red! – and the gorgeous Doñana National Park.

“Obviously there’s the massive Guadiana river too, which divides Portugal and Spain. So really people do tend to get the best of both worlds by buying a property in Huelva,” concludes Nigel.
All the apartments near the beach that Girasol Homes have in Huelva are key ready and at bargain prices compared to the Costa del Sol, such as these four 2-bedroom apartments on a private residential estate next to a golf course.
There are also good value-for-money country estate properties for sale in Huelva for a business, like this 11-bed countryside house.
