ARCHIVED - Thousands of fake clothes seized in raids on Benidorm bazaars
Garments with a market value of 77,000 euros, were removed as part of a crackdown on industrial fraud in the Marina Baixa town
Police in Benidorm have seized more than 2,000 counterfeit items in a series of raids at cheap bazaars in the coastal resort, and arrested five shop owners as part of an investigation into industrial fraud.
The probe began in September after officers from Benidorm Local Police's Group V unit, responsible for investigating industrial fraud, received tip offs that several shops in the town were selling fake brand clothing and other items.
An expert in this type of fraudulent practice joined police in the raids and confirmed without any doubt the garments, with a market value of 77,655 euros, "did not comply with the quality and safety standards of the original brands", according to the police sources.
The five arrested shop managers and owners have given statements to the police and been released pending a court appearance.
