ARCHIVED - Three men arrested for stealing bluefin tuna to sell in San Pedro fishmongers
Several bluefish tuna worth up to 175,000 were stolen from Portman
Three men from Portman, in the municipality of La Unión, have been detained for allegedly raiding several Atlantic bluefin tuna farms and stealing around 175,000 euros-worth of fish to be sold elsewhere in the Region of Murcia.
The thieves, aged between 25 and 46 years old, where found in possession of a bluefin tuna specimen weighing around 120 kilograms. In addition to seizing the fish, officers also seized a boat, fishing equipment, a van, a trailer and documentation linking the suspects to a fishmongers in the municipality of San Pedro del Pinatar.
The owner of the tuna farm reported the theft of up to 50 pieces, which the police have linked to the same group of individuals, and, after raiding the fish shop in San Pedro, officers found three pieces of illegally obtained tuna, as well as other fish species thought to be stolen.
As a result of the investigation, the three men are going to be charged with robbery with force, crimes against public health, crimes against flora and fauna and belonging to a criminal organisation.
