ARCHIVED - Dead body found on the Murcia-Caravaca motorway
Those reporting the incident believed it to be the corpse of an animal
It has been confirmed by the Guardia Civil and road network maintenance staff that the remains found at kilometre 18 on the Autovía del Noroeste, which runs between Alcantarilla and Caravaca de la Cruz, belong to a human being.
No information has yet been released concerning the identity of the corpse, which was reported by motorists at around 21.05 last night near the locality of Los Baños de Mula. Those calling the 112 emergency services number thought at first that what they had seen was the remains of an animal which had been run over, but the truth proved to be even more gruesome.
When personnel from the regional roads maintenance division arrived to move the remains of the “dog” they discovered that the body was in fact human, and had been distributed across the road service by passing motorists.
The road was immediately closed to enable forensics to gather the pieces together and try to find a way of identifying the type of vehicle which had caused the death of the victim.
No further information is yet available, and although the most likely explanation is that the victim had been run over there are no signs of the vehicle involved.
