Today is Torre Pacheco day
Celebrate the history of the creation of the town of Torre Pacheco almost 200 years ago
Today, Tuesday September 17, Torre Pacheco celebrates the Day of the Municipality.
It is a day that is marked to celebrate the occasion when, on September 17, 1836 the town of Torre Pacheco was constituted as its own town with its own Ayuntamiento after splitting off from Murcia capital.
There had been previous attempts to create a town of Torre Pacheco in 1813 and 1820, but it wasn’t until 1836 when a territory was formed within the limits of the primitive parish as founded in 1603 by the Dean Luís Pacheco and under the patronage of the Virgen del Rosario.
At first, when the municipal district was created, it had just 48 houses and another 1,200 spread over an extensive area of 200km2, formed by eleven districts and councils.
The first census held back then recorded 5,000 inhabitants of Torre Pacheco. It would take up to 30 years for the Torre Pacheco Town Hall to have its own building.
The current Mayor of Torre Pacheco, Pedro Ángel Roca (pictured, above), has congratulated the residents of the town for the last 188 years of history, which were commemorated on Saturday September 14.
