ARCHIVED - Top 10 richest men in the world double their wealth while income falls for the 99 per cent
In the last two years that the world has been wrestling with the Covid pandemic, wealth inequality has spun out of control
In the last two years, since coronavirus has been on the scene, the incomes of 99% of humanity have worsened and more than 160 million people have been forced into poverty while the 10 richest men in the world – and yes, they’re all men – have doubled their wealth from 700 billion dollars to 1.5 trillion dollars, according to an Oxfam report.
The top 10 wealthiest people in the world – Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Bernard Arnault, Bill Gates, Larry Ellison, Larry Page, Sergey Brin, Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Ballmer and Warren Buffet – earned an average of 1.3 billion dollars a day between them since 2020.
“If these ten men were to lose 99.999% of their wealth tomorrow, they would still be richer than 99% of the people on the planet,” says Oxfam director Franc Cortada. “They currently accumulate six times more wealth than the world’s 3.1 billion poorest people put together.”
At the same time, the pandemic is estimated to have delayed the end of the gender pay gap by 135 years, and women have lost out on 800 billion dollars in income.
