ARCHIVED - Torre Pacheco learns about public drainage systems from Alicante towns
ARCHIVED ARTICLE The Murcia town’s council has visited several municipalities in the Vega Baja to find out more about their Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS)
The Mayor of
Torre Pacheco, Antonio León, together with councillors and technicians, has visited several towns in the Vega Baja, Alicante province, to learn more about their Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) with a view to implementing similar systems in the town's parks and gardens.
In San Fulgencio, they saw first hand how permeable paving has been laid in public green spaces and the way in which rainwater is collected and stored, along with the use of native vegetation with low water consumption.
The water utility company Hidrogea also explained how it has adapted ravines and streams to allow the management of torrential rains, as well as implementing the ‘polder’ process – a low-lying tract of land that forms an artificial hydrological entity, enclosed by embankments known as dikes – to protect urban centres in municipalities such as Alicante and Benijófar.
Torre Pacheco Council currently plans to alleviate the risk of flooding in the centre of the town, in particular calles Emilio Zurano, Torre Anita and Campo de Golf, with the construction of bridges in avenidas Fontes and Gerardo Molina, together with the diversion of runoff towards the watercourses and the lowering of the level to allow greater hydraulic capacity.
It’s hoped the tour of Vega Baja towns will help provide practical solutions for the drainage project planned in the area of Rambla Sur.
