ARCHIVED - Torre Pacheco Town Hall removes the LGTBI flag following Vox complaint
Political party Vox decided to take legal action against the town hall of Torre Pacheco for flying “unofficial flags in public places".
Torre Pacheco Town Hall has decided to remove an LGTBI flag flying on the façade of the municipal town hall in support of gender equality week activities following the threat of court action from right-wing party VOX.
The flag was "hastily" removed by the council.
Vox spokesman, José Francisco Garre, argued that the "existence of a Supreme Court ruling prohibits the installation of unofficial flags in public places” meaning that the council would be forced to take them down, which they did.
However, this back and forth between the two groups was always on the cards and has yet to be resolved.
Back in June, the councillor for Equality in Torre Pacheco, Verónica Martínez, announced that the government team was planning to install the flag on the façade of the Town Hall. Garre stated at the time he believed “the flag represented the councillor for Equality and she would fly it until a ruling indicated that she could not do so." And she did.
But legal action today lead to what Garre described as the town hall "hastily removing it, showing to the courts they have done so voluntarily".
Despite claiming a mini victory over the council, Garre stated that the Vox party was still going to pursue legal action; "The Independent Party of Torre Pacheco and the PSOE always act in the same way: they did the same thing last year,” he said.
“Once they know that the matter is in court, they remove the LGTBI flag so that we do not continue with the legal actions, however, we will go ahead for the judge to rule on these illegal acts," he concluded.
