ARCHIVED - Torrevieja council urges residents not to respond to fake vaccination messages on social media
There have been reports of fake messages all over the country recently
In the last few days there has been a proliferation in the number of "bulos" or fake messages being posted to social media urging members of the public to go along to vaccination centres without appointments, and Torrevieja has become one of the latest "victims" of this not particularly funny "joke".
The council put out a communication on Thursday stating that, “it is circulating on instant messaging platforms and social networks that, TODAY all of those people over 70 years of age, who are not vaccinated, can go to the Municipal Leisure Center (CMO), WITHOUT ANY APPOINTMENT and get vaccinated. Torrevieja City Council would like to confirm that this information is FALSE. Therefore, we ask all Torrevieja residents ensure that this message is spread throughout the community and request that all residents remain calm.
All of those who are in the age group of over 70 years, and have not yet been vaccinated, will be notified directly by the Torrevieja Health Department and given an appointment."
This same "joke" messaging has been reported in many other locations recently, in neighbouring Murcia where pranksters posted similar messages in both Cartagena and Murcia, and further along the coast in Andalucía, where police displayed a distinct lack of sense of humour and have brought criminal charges against the individual responsible for a "bulo" in Seville, which brought 4,000 people to non-existent vaccinations.
