ARCHIVED - Torrevieja undertakes conservation work in Cabo Cervera to protect the cat's head jarilla
This falls within a micro-reserve covering 9 hectares and is one of the few places in which this protected plant is to be found
The Cabo Cervera area of Torrevieja is one of very few places in which the protected and vulnerable cat's head jarilla (Helianthemum caput-felis, often referred to as the jarilla de cabeza de gato ) can still be found and in order to protect it a new project is underway to prevent the public from trampling all over it!
Banging in a few poles is actually considerably more complicated to organise than it may at first appear and in order for this collection of poles and rope to be erected a project involving the Red Natura 2000 Brigade of the province of Alicante, General Directorate of Natural Environment of the Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Climate Emergency and Ecological Transition, Department of the Environment of the Torrevieja City Council and the Provincial Coastal Service of Alicante has been prepared and processed, with each body involved having to approve and agree the project.
Access to the beach of La Mata via Cabo Cervera involves crossing a 9 hectare area which is listed as the “Cabo Cervera” flora micro-reserve, declared by ORDER 24/2017, of August 31, of the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment, Climate Change and Rural Development”so the project simply involves defining the basic pedestrian routes within the area using ropes and poles.
In addition, other invasive non-native species will be eliminated and revegetation work with native species typical of the coastline carried out as well as further planting of the cat's head jarilla, the aim being to prevent erosion and protect the future of the species long-term.
