ARCHIVED - Tourism will not return to pre-pandemic levels until 2023 says Spanish government
In its economic ‘Stability Plan’ sent to the European Union, Spain’s government has set out that the tourism sector will not return to its former levels before the pandemic until 2023.
The document also showed Spain’s tourism trade is this year only expected to reach 42.4 per cent of its 2019 levels, while the country’s hotel, transport and leisure industries will see activity 25 per cent lower than 2019 this year. In 2022 that difference is expected to drop to 8 per cent.
Spain previously announced that its ‘Recovery Plan’ will see €3,400 million allocated to the tourism sector, in a bid to create 800,000 jobs over the next three years throughout Spain’s economy.
Since the pandemic began, Spain’s tourism sector is thought to have lost around €116 million since April 2020 116,000 million after activity was 75 per cent lower than the year before.
As an example, Spain lost €3.8 billion in February alone.
