ARCHIVED - Traffic Law reform will not increase fines for drivers in Spain
Around 50 new rules and regulations will come into effect on March 21 in Spain
Next month, the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) is poised to introduce a series of new rules and regulations as part of its reform of the Traffic Law, and the authorities have promised to crack down on dangerous driving behaviour in a bid to improve Spain’s road accident statistics.
Ahead of the changes, DGT boss Pere Navarro reassured on Wednesday February 23 that motorists won’t be slapped with heavier fines as a result of the new regulations.
“The economic amounts of the traffic sanctions have not been increased, there was a debate and it seemed to us that these were not the times to increase the traffic sanctions,” Mr Navarro said amid criticism of the DGT for its “eagerness” to fine drivers.
At a conference on the ‘Reform of the Traffic and Road Safety Law,' Mr Navarro explained that the changes will include up to 50 new regulations, and for the first time in Spain, motorists will be penalised for non-compliance with anti-pollution regulations, such as driving in low emission zones.
As the Match 21 implementation date approaches, the DGT now faces the challenging task of fully informing drivers in Spain about the myriad of new rules, since there has most definitely been “a change in the rules of the game.” As such, the traffic authorities have launched an information media campaign which will run until the Traffic Law comes into effect.
Mr Navarro highlighted the opportunity of the law reform to make people more aware of the potential dangers of driving and the positive of “keeping the issue of road safety on the agenda.” The Traffic Law, he said, represents a huge “step forward” in the process of trying to make Spain “a reference country in safe mobility.”
