Twelve dead across Spain after deadly weekend on beaches and rivers
A run of tragic incidents over three days has left families across Spain in mourning, with victims ranging in age from 12 to 80
It's been a tragic few days on Spain's coasts, with twelve people losing their lives to drowning over the course of just three days. Eight of the deaths happened on beaches across mainland Spain, while further victims died in a river, a reservoir and a swimming pool.
The first two deaths happened on Friday June 12 in Torrox, Málaga, where an 80-year-old man and a 75-year-old woman died on Las Lindes beach after other bathers alerted the emergency services. The Guardia Civil, Local Police and medical teams were sent out but could only confirm both had died. The sea was rough that day, with a noticeable swell.
Saturday June 13 brought four more deaths, two in Andalucía and two in Catalonia. In Almería, a 31-year-old woman couldn't get out of the water at Playa de los Muertos in Carboneras. Rescuers tried to reach her on a board, but the current was too strong, so Maritime Rescue sent a helicopter. She was found alive but died shortly after.
Later that day, a 12-year-old girl went missing while swimming at Costacabana beach in Almería. She was brought ashore and given CPR, but sadly couldn't be revived.
In Catalonia, an 18-year-old drowned in the Llobregat River near Barcelona after jumping in with friends and failing to resurface, despite a huge response involving twelve fire crews. Separately, an 80-year-old French diver died near Cadaqués after failing to resurface during a dive with a companion. His body was later found around three metres down near the island of s'Encalladora.
Cantabria also saw two deaths on Saturday. A 43-year-old man from Trápaga suffered a cardiac arrest while swimming at Oriñón beach and was pulled ashore by a kitesurfer, though resuscitation efforts proved unsuccessful. Later that evening, another man died at nearby Brazomar beach, though further details haven't been released.
The same weekend, firefighters rescued a woman stranded among rocks on Los Barcos beach in Arnuero, who didn't need hospital treatment.
Sunday June 14 brought three more deaths. A 77-year-old man died after being pulled unconscious from the water at Rihuete beach in Mazarrón, Murcia, while a 69-year-old woman was treated nearby for an anxiety attack. In Valencia, a 70-year-old man was found floating off Daimús beach and is believed to have suffered a medical emergency while swimming.
Also in Valencia, a 79-year-old woman was found dead in a swimming pool in Chiva by her husband after he woke from a nap. Paramedics were unable to revive her and a postmortem is due to take place on Monday.
