ARCHIVED - Twenty Spanish areas on alert for rain, wind and waves
Several communities, including Alicante, are on yellow and orange alert
A total of 20 provinces across Spain have been put under warning for heavy rain and driving winds, as well as treacherous seas, on Monday January 10 on a day where the temperatures will increase slightly after a decidedly chilly weekend.
According to State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), eastern Cantabria and the Pyrenees can expect abundant and persistent rainfall, while cloudy skies are predicted for the northern half of the country and the Balearic Islands.
Throughout the rest of Spain, clouds will predominate until noon, while in the Canary Islands, high cloud cover with a chance of haze will persist all day.
Temperatures will generally rise this Monday, although a slight drop might be experienced in the northwest of Spain, the northeast of Catalonia and the Canary Islands. Weak frosts will be restricted to the Pyrenees.
Huesca, Lleida, Tarragona and Castellón will be on an orange warning for wind, while Teruel, Zaragoza, the islands of Ibiza and Formentera, Albacete, the Region of Murcia, Navarra, Alicante and Valencia will be on a yellow alert.
The wind will cause dangerous seas in Asturias, Cantabria, A Coruña, Lugo, Guipúzcoa and Vizcaya, where orange warnings have been activated for waves, as well as on the islands of Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera, and the provinces of Tarragona, Pontevedra, Alicante, Castellón and Valencia, which will be on yellow notice. Huesca, Girona, Lleida and Navarra will also be at risk from avalanches.
