ARCHIVED - Two caught in Mijas with boot full of illegally captured sea urchins
There are strict rules on shellfishing and capture of marine species in Andalusia, which had been broken.
The Guardia Civil’s Seprona nature protection branch has reported two members of the public who were caught in Mijas with 105 kilos of illegally caught sea urchins in the boot of their vehicle
The Local Police found the huge pile of sea urchins inside the boot of a car after spotting the two on Sheriff beach in Mijas with diving equipment. Most were still alive, and officers returned them to the water and confiscated the pair’s diving and fishing gear.
They face charges for offences against flora, fauna and domestic animals and for failing to comply with the regulations in force for the fishing of this species, which requires the possession of a licence and compliance with quotas that limit the amount of product per fisherman per day. One of the men was found to have been reported in the past for similar activities.
The police believe the catch was destined for Cádiz, where sea urchins are a highly sought-after delicacy. They are usually eaten in bars and restaurants and are in great demand in the catering industry.
