Two dead after driving the wrong way down La Manga road
The elderly driver accidentally turned the wrong way onto the dual carriageway
An elderly couple died in a car crash this Wednesday July 3 when they were driving on the wrong side of the road down the RM-12, the La Manga dual carriageway.
The accident occurred at around 8pm on Wednesday evening, when the car in which a an elderly man and woman were travelling collided head-on with another car at kilometre 17 of the RM-12, at the Calblanque exit.
The car, driven by the 89-year-old man, was travelling in the opposite direction to the flow of traffic.
It seems that, at the junction from Cabo de Palos to La Manga, the driver accidentally turned onto the wrong side of the dual carriageway.
The Cartagena Fire Brigade had to free the couple from the car as they had become trapped, and an ambulance whisked them to the Santa Lucía hospital in Cartagena. On arrival at the hospital, both were in a critical condition and died a few hours later.
The accident left one other person injured, who was travelling in the other car. They were taken to the Hospital General Universitario Los Arcos del Mar Menor with minor injuries.
