ARCHIVED - Two women treated for smoke inhalation following flat fire in Alfaz del Pi
The blaze broke out at a property in the Marina Baixa town, Alicante province during the early hours of Tuesday morning November 16
Two women were treated for smoke inhalation following a fire at a flat in Alfaz del Pi.
Fire crews were called to the blaze at the three-storey residential block on Calle Joaquin Rodrigo at around 12.40am on Tuesday November 16, the cause of which is still unknown.
When three fire engines from the Alicante Provincial Fire Service supported by medics in two ambulances arrived at the scene, one of the injured women was calling for help from a balcony.
According to sources, flames were clearly visible from some distance and had spread to an adjoining property, completely gutting the first.
Paramedics treated two women, aged 55 and 81, for smoke inhalation and hypertension respectively at the scene before they were both taken to the Marina Baixa Hospital in Villajoyosa.
Elsewhere in Alicante province, fifty residents were forced to flee their homes after a blaze on the seventh floor of a 27-storey block of flats in Benidorm.
