ARCHIVED - UK Foreign Office updates passport advice for travel to Spain and EU
Passports can be a maximum of 10-years-old and must be valid for at least 3 months for entry to Spain
Stricter passport regulations have been in place for UK citizens travelling to Spain and the rest of the EU since Brexit but in recent months confusion has abounded with countless stories of Brits being turned away from flights due to their passport expiry dates.
With the summer season fast approaching and millions of Britons expected to flock to Spain, the Foreign Office issued an update in recent days to clarify the situation. According to the post-Brexit rules, UK passports can be a maximum of 10 years old (previously, they were valid for 10 years and nine months) and there must be at least three months left on the passport for a UK citizen to be allowed entry to an EU country.
The UK Foreign Office website issued the following update on the passport rules:
"Your passport must be:
- issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country (check the ‘date of issue’)
- valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)
"You must check your passport meets these requirements before you travel.
"If your passport was issued before 1 October 2018, extra months may have been added to its expiry date."
For this reason, travellers are advised to carefully check the issuing date of their passport, rather than the expiry date.
Passengers should also be aware that masks are still mandatory on flights to Spain.
