ARCHIVED - UK postpones strict custom rules for EU food produce until July
Farmers in the Region of Murcia and in the rest of Spain will benefit from the delay
The United Kingdom has decided to postpone the phytosanitary controls on fruits and vegetables imported into the UK until July 1 2022, after the new rules, first introduced in January, caused shortages of many food products.
Members of the agricultural sector in Spain and in the rest of Europe, especially in the Region of Murcia, where many companies ship produce directly to the UK, will welcome this breathing period from the strict customs rules.
This is the second time that the UK government has delayed the enforcement of various customs rules for imports from the European Union, naming the cause for the delays in the food chain as the impact that the pandemic has had on global supply chains, although many believe that these are just the first of many consequences derived from Brexit.
The Spanish president of Proexports has predicted that food shortage problems in the UK, specifically of fresh fruit and vegetables, will only get worse over the next few months as the winter cold sets in and British farms harvest their last crops.
He also explained that British distributors will benefit from the less strict custom controls, as they fear that “complicated customs procedures and difficulties in selling [products] in the UK will alienate suppliers and encourage them to seek other destinations”.
