ARCHIVED - Underwater wine storage facility to be located off Cartagena coast
Wines will be aged under the sea off the coast of Cartagena
The Port of Cartagena will play host to the first underwater winery in the Region of Murcia, via a first innovative project for the aging of wines and other alcoholic beverages under the sea in the region .
Promoted by Beacons y Obras Hidráulicas de Mazarrón, SL, a company that has more than 15 years experience installing infrastructure for aquatic projects in the area, this initiative will cover an area of 150 square meters between the island of Las Palomas or Los Colomos and Punta del Moco, at a depth of 30 meters. The location selected is outside of the area included within the red Natura 2000.
The benefits of having an underwater bodega as opposed to one on land are manifold. The wine, which the Port Authority plans to aim at a gourmet market, ages much quicker under water and the facility itself is much cheaper to maintain. Energy consumption is reduced as the seabed is more efficient than traditional air conditioning and marine life in the area will be improved as the facility will be located on a new, specially-made artificial reef. The location of the winery was carefully selected to promote marine biodiversity.
In addition, it opens the door to other economic activities focused on expanding the region's tourist trade and underwater sports activities.
The Port Authority in Cartagena has submitted the proposed project for public scrutiny and initiated the required administrative procedures required to position the new reef and wine in the selected location.
