ARCHIVED - Unemployment in the Murcia Region falls due to summer contracts
Murcia experienced a 6.92 per cent decrease in unemployment during July
According to data released on Tuesday, August 3 by the Ministry of Employment, the number of people out of work in the Region of Murcia during July fell by 7,878, representing a decrease of 6.92 per cent when compared to last month and the largest reduction since 1996.
There are currently 105,940 unemployed registered on the SEPE lists, 6.92 per cent less than the previous month.
Current records are still far from pre-pandemic levels, as in July 2019 before the pandemic struck, there were 93,818 unemployed, but the economy is already beginning to straighten course after more than a year in the midst of the Covid pandemic. The advancement of the vaccination campaign has also completely changed the outlook, as has the reopening of the tourist trade and domestic travel, since the Region of Murcia depends less on foreign visitors than other communities.
Not even the restrictions imposed in July have slowed the trend, since the measures that affect the hospitality industry and the service sector as a whole are less severe than during other waves of the pandemic.
Of the total unemployed, according to the report, 15,131 are foreigners, which is 1,325 less than a month ago (-8.05 per cent). In Murcia, there are currently 41,957 unemployed men and 63,983 women, in addition to 9,432 under the age of 24.
By sectors of activity, the largest group of unemployed is still found in the service sector, at 68,239, although it is the sector that has reduced the gap most intensely in one month by removing 4,783 from the unemployment lists in July.
