Until July 17 Nanocosmos open-air exhibition in Caravaca de la Cruz
Beautiful and fascinating microscopic photography in the Plaza de San Juan de la Cruz in Caravaca
The subject of the outdoor exhibition “Nanocosmos”, which is being held in the Plaza de San Juan de la Cruz in Caravaca until July 17, is the unexpected shapes and forms of microscopic images, and for this reason it is also titled “The Reality Hidden from the Human Eye”.
The exhibition has been made possible by the Fundación ‘La Caixa’ and the Town Hall of Caravaca to coincide with the Holy Jubilee Year in 2024 and consists of 36 images taken through an electronic microscope by writer and cinema artist Michael Benson.
They combine art, high technology and science in an exploration of the microscopic world facilitated by equipment from the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa, and some examples show the beautiful structures of single-cell algae and phytoplankton. These “diatoms” absorb up to 20,000 million tons of carbon dioxide a year and are responsible for between 20 and 50 per cent of the oxygen which reaches the Earth’s atmosphere.
Benson also focuses on the relationship between insects and plants, and in the exhibition we can see small ticks measuring as little as a millimetre in magnificent detail. Another example is the wings of a dragonfly, which despite their fragility can propel the insects at up to 54 km/h!
Initially there are guided visits of the exhibits on Saturdays at 12.00, 17.00 and 18.00 and on Sundays at 12.00, 13.00 and 17.00 horas. However, as of June 22 the timetable changes to the following:
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 20.00
Weekends 19.00, 20.00 and 21.00.
Group visits can also be arranged by telephone on 900 801137.
The exhibition is in place 24 hours a day.
