ARCHIVED - Video captures giant falling palm tree narrowly miss motorists in Torrevieja
Winds reached speeds of up to 70km/h in the Vega Baja municipality, Alicante province
Two cars were seconds away from being crushed when strong winds, with gusts of up to 70km/h, blew over a huge palm tree on the busy Paseo Vista Alegre in Torrevieja on Sunday night, October 3.
Footage from a webcam installed by Proyecto Mastral, which provides meteorological and climatological information, recorded the moment when the tree fell, moments after a car passed by, forcing an oncoming vehicle to brake sharply.
A split second either way and the outcome could have been disastrous.

Torrevieja firefighters were quickly on the scene to clear the tree and debris from the road, and minimise further disruptions.
In addition to strong winds, the Vega Baja was also hit with rain and a drop in temperatures on Sunday night, conditions which are expected to continue throughout the week, especially in the early hours of the morning.
However, despite temperatures falling generally over the next five days, they could reach 29 degrees Celsius on Tuesday October 5, before dropping once again.
