VIDEO: Four passengers fall ill from fumes on BA flight from Barcelona
Emergency responders swarmed the plane when it touched down in Heathrow after arriving from Spain
Ambulance crews and a team of firefighters rushed to the runway at Heathrow Airport on Sunday October 8 after four passengers became seriously ill amid reports of “unknown fumes” on a British Airways flight from Barcelona. A hazardous response unit also swarmed the aircraft when it touched down at Terminal 5 at 4.15pm.
While the four sick passengers were treated at the scene by paramedics, others onboard claim to have been forced to wait on the plane for more than an hour and a half while checks were carried out, although the chemical readings inside all came back within the normal range.
Another passenger wrote: “Scenes at #Heathrow T5 as the BA flight from Barcelona has had its crew fall sick upon landing, and the passengers are being held on the runway.”

They continued: “No information other than smoke/fumes were detected in the cockpit and some cabin crew have been told to strip after falling ill. We’ve all now been herded into some departure gates.”
A spokesperson for London Fire Brigade explained that unknown fumes were reported in the aircraft, adding: “The chemical team did a sweep of plane and found no elevated readings. It is unclear whether there are any injuries at this stage, but certainly not significantly.”
A Heathrow spokesperson added: “Our teams responded to an incident reported this afternoon. The incident has now been resolved. We apologise to our passengers for any inconvenience caused.”
The day before, a Ryanair flight travelling to Hamburg in Germany from Palma de Mallorca was forced to make an emergency landing due to an in-flight engine failure. The Boeing 737 MAX carrying 201 passengers was forced into a holding pattern for around 80 minutes in order to burn enough fuel so it could land safely.
