VIDEO: Hailstones and thunderstorms cause flooding in Murcia while water scarcity alert issued
Emergency services received 52 calls due to the inclement weather yesterday, and more rainstorms are on the way
The rainstorms in the Region of Murcia yesterday, Tuesday September 12, caused some flooding in parts of the centre of the province and some people were even surprised by hailstones falling.
At the Enrique Roca stadium in Murcia city, better known as Nueva Condomina where Real Murcia CF play, the pitch tinged almost completely white by hailstones so thick and heavy they looked like a blanket of snow.

In the municipality of Molina de Segura, the Carretera de El Chorrico road turned into a veritable roaring river, sweeping dustbins and debris down the street.

Across the Region, the 112 Emergency Coordination Centre received a total of 52 calls related to the weather, of which 47 required rescue workers to be called out to help.
The vast majority of the incidents were due to obstacles on the road (19), followed by falling objects (6). The places with the most emergency calls were Murcia capital city (21) and Molina de Segura (15), where the rainfall was heaviest.
For this Wednesday 13, more storms are forecast on the coast of Murcia, in Cartagena, Mazarrón and San Javier, while storms alerts have been issued by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) for the centre and north that will last all afternoon.
There will be more rain and storms to come on Thursday September 14 and Friday 15.
Reservoirs still not at their usual level
Despite this spell of heavy rainfall, the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura (CHS), the water agency for the Murcia area, has warned that this particularly dry summer has left the Region’s reservoirs below their usual level for this time of year.
At the beginning of this month, the Segura basin entered, for the first time in this hydrological year, an alert level according to the scarcity indicators defined in the CHS’s Special Drought Plan.
“Regarding drought indicators, exclusively linked to rainfall, the basin remains outside the situation of prolonged drought, which for the moment removes the declaration of extraordinary drought,” they admitted. “If consumption containment is maintained, [we] can guarantee water for irrigation and industrial uses until the end of September without the need to apply restrictions.”
Crucially, “Human supply in principle should not be affected even in the coming months of the new hydrological year.”
All the same, they have once again emphasised that it will be necessary to continue adjusting irrigation consumption in order to guarantee water supplies in this hydrological year to reach the end of it with an adequate volume of reserves.
