ARCHIVED - Violent robber who attacked woman in her 90s at her Aguilas home is jailed
A neighbour in the Region of Murcia town helped bring the “dangerous criminal” to justice
An “experienced and dangerous” criminal who targeted an elderly woman in her 90s, forcing his way into her Águilas home and violently demanding she hand over jewellery, has been arrested and remanded in prison.
The detainee, who is charged with robbery with violence and intimidation and serious resistance to law enforcement officers, allegedly broke into the nonagenarian’s home via the terrace, dragged the elderly woman into the living room and forced her to hand over her valuables.
The violent robbery occurred on Saturday January 15, and thanks to the cooperation of a vigilant neighbour, was arrested by the Region of Murcia’s Guardia Civil with the support of Águilas Local Police the same day.
Police were alerted to the alleged robbery following a tip-off from a local resident who suspected someone had broken into the elderly victim’s home.
The neighbour reportedly heard the woman’s screams and raced to the house where he ran into the suspect coming out of the house carrying a stolen television.
After a brief struggle, the detainee managed to flee, leaving the TV behind.
Once the victim, who sustained minor injuries, was checked over, officers began taking statements and gathering CCTV images from cameras in the area, identifying a suspect described as “an extremely violent criminal”.
The suspect attempted to “seriously resist arrest”, but was eventually cuffed and searched. Some of the elderly woman’s jewellery was recovered and returned to the rightful owner.
The Court of Instruction number 5 of Murcia has ordered the detainee be remanded in prison.
