ARCHIVED - Wave of rubbish bin fires in Torre Pacheco
Bin men in Torre Pacheco, Murcia, extinguished six fires last weekend
A wave of fires in container bins across the municipality of Torre Pacheco has prompted the local authorities to issue a series of warnings and recommendations about fire safety.
Over the weekend, January 21 to 23, the municipal waste collection service STV Gestión had to put out six different fires in rubbish bins, most of which were caused by residents throwing embers and ashes into the bins without properly extinguishing them.
These fires put bin men at risk as well as any vehicles, properties and other members of the public who may be in the vicinity at the time.
Due to the cold winter weather, many Torre Pacheco residents are probably using their fireplaces more often than usual and then dumping the ash in the bin, which is the most likely reason for the increase in fires. The authorities have asked locals to make sure their embers are properly extinguished by dousing them in water before disposing of them.
It is also worth noting that these kinds of incidents can incur fines for those responsible, according to the municipal law.
