What makes San Javier an Intelligent Tourist Destination?
Spain is pioneering an initiative that aims to promote sustainable tourism development and improve the quality of life for local residents

San Javier has been making significant strides in becoming an Intelligent Tourist Destination (DTI), a transformation which is rooted in the town's commitment to governance, accessibility, sustainability, innovation and technology.
In January 2023, the San Javier Town Council completed its initial diagnostic report under the Smart Tourist Destination (DTI) methodology, promoted by the Secretary of State for Tourism. This comprehensive evaluation assessed the town's tourism management across 97 requirements and 261 indicators, providing a clear roadmap for future improvements.
Building on this foundation, the Department of Tourism has initiated follow-up work to monitor progress and implement the recommended strategies. SEGITTUR, the State Trading Company for the Management of Innovation and Tourism Technologies, will oversee this process in the coming months, ensuring that San Javier aligns with the current DTI methodology.
San Javier's journey towards becoming a DTI began in February 2022 when it joined the Smart Tourist Destinations Network. This membership underscored the town's dedication to transforming its tourism sector through innovative practices.
By December 2022, San Javier had earned the DTI Adherido badge, signifying its adherence to the model's five strategic pillars.
In particular, San Javier’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its efforts to balance tourism growth with the protection of the environment. Initiatives like the conservation of the Mar Menor’s endangered giant mussel highlight this dedication.
Accessibility has also been a focal point, with improvements made to public spaces, while technological advancements, including the development of user-friendly tourism apps and interactive information points, have greatly enhanced the visitor experience.
The DTI model developed by Spain is a national and international reference and San Javier’s recognition as an Intelligent Tourist Destination is thanks to its commitment to continuous improvement.
