Woman, 80, dies on Mazarron beach
The number of people who have drowned on beaches and in swimming pools in Murcia has doubled this summer
An 80-year-old woman drowned this Tuesday July 23 at around 2pm while swimming in the sea off the Playa de la Bahía beach in Puerto de Mazarrón.
The woman became unconscious while in the water and had to be pulled to shore by lifeguards, where they performed CPR on her as she was in cardiorespiratory arrest.
Unfortunately, neither lifeguards nor paramedics were able to save her, and she sadly died. Her daughter, who was also present, had to be treated by the medical staff for an anxiety crisis.
This is the tenth drowning in the Region of Murcia so far this year, more than double the number of drownings there were by this same point last year.
By July 2023, four people were recorded to have died in swimming pools or in the sea in Murcia, and in the whole year there were just eight. This year’s death toll is already higher than that.
So far this year, accidents in swimming pools or on beaches have given rise to 26 emergency situations, of which 16 have resulted in hospitalisations and the other 10 have resulted in deaths. Of these, the vast majority (19) occurred in the sea, while six were in swimming pools.
