A man has been arrested after allegedly killing his former partner inside a shop at the Carrefour Infante shopping centre in Murcia.
The 44-year-old woman was found dead at around 5.15pm on Wednesday August 5 after a colleague arrived to start the afternoon shift at the shoe repair shop where she worked. He found the business closed and raised the alarm after discovering her body inside.
Paramedics and Policía Nacional officers were called to the scene, but there was nothing they could do to save her.
Police immediately launched a search for the woman's former partner, who they believe left the shopping centre after the attack.
He was arrested at around 12.15am on Thursday August 6 in Puerto Lumbreras. Investigators believe he was trying to make his way towards Granada when he was stopped in a joint operation involving the Policía Nacional and Guardia Civil.
The case is being investigated as suspected gender violence.
According to investigators, the woman was attacked with a knife inside the shoe repair shop. After the attack, the suspect allegedly pulled down the shutter before leaving the scene.
The couple shared a five-year-old daughter.
The man had previously been convicted of domestic abuse against the same woman. Court records show he was found guilty on April 15, 2026 of an offence of family abuse committed against his former partner.
People working in nearby businesses said the couple had been in the process of divorcing. Despite the attack taking place during the afternoon, staff in neighbouring shops, Carrefour employees working at the checkouts opposite and customers in the shopping centre all told police they had not heard or seen anything unusual.
The investigation is continuing while officers work to establish exactly what happened inside the shop before the woman was killed.
