28 times more floodwater will be able to pass under the bridge on the RM-54
Work continues on the coast of the Mar Menor to improve the access road leading into Los Nietos over the floodwater channel known as the Rambla de La Carrasquilla, and this week four structures are being installed to dramatically increase the flow rate in the channel in times of heavy rain.
In recent years the RM-54 south of Los Nietos has often been flooded during heavy storms, and it is hoped that the new infrastructures will reduce the problem by making it possible for 260 m3 of water to pass under the bridge per second – as much as 28 times its current capacity. In theory, this should be enough to protect the road from any storm up to the estimated intensity of those which occur in the Campo de Cartagena approximately once a century.
The project in Los Nietos began in February and is scheduled to be completed in May, with a budget of 212,692 euros.
