Work is being carried out by 15 employment trainees in Mazarrón to recover the “Mastia” educational botanic garden, which has been neglected over the last year during the coronavirus pandemic.
The Mastia garden was created in 2018 at a cost of just 6,000 euros with the aim of educating about local eco-systems, and featured examples of over 100 plant species native to the Mediterranean coastal regions of Spain alongside others which represent the eco-systems of the African and American continents.
The Jardín Etnobotánico “Mastia” was named after an ancient lost Iberian city which some believe may have been what is now Cartagena, and is located opposite the cemetery of Mazarrón on Avenida Juan Carlos I. During its restoration new species will be planted, and when the work has been completed schoolchildren will once again be given guided tours of the garden.
