ARCHIVED - Air Nostrum strike results in 78 cancelled flights across Spain
The Valencian airline has scheduled strikes throughout Spain over Christmas and the New Year
As the countdown to the big day begins, more travellers are having their Christmas plans ruined as strike action continues to dominate the Spanish airports. Between Thursday December 22 and Friday 23, Valencian airline Air Nostrum has cancelled a total of 78 flights across the country as the first days of industrial action get underway.
The work stoppages have been ordered by the Spanish Union of Airline Pilots (Sepla) and although regulations demand that carriers provide a minimum service for passengers, this still means that 21% of planes will be grounded over the next 48 hours.
In a statement today, Air Nostrum has expressed its regret over “the inconvenience caused” to customers and has assured that “it is doing everything possible to offer alternative solutions to those affected”.
The disruption is likely to be extensive though, since more strike days are planned on December 26, 27, 29 and 30 as well as on January 2 and 3. Workers have also threatened additional stoppages if their pay and working conditions demands aren’t met.
Air Nostrum bosses have confirmed that they will post a full list of cancelled flights for next week’s strikes in the coming days.
It’s far from plane sailing this Christmas as staff at Vueling, Spain’s second-largest airline, have also voted for strike action under the same union. These work stoppages are scheduled for every Friday, Sunday, Monday and holidays from November 1 to January 31 as well as holidays and on December 24 and 31 and January 5.
As a result of the Air Nostrum strikes, a total of 39 flights have been axed this Thursday, departing from Alicante, Bilbao, Bologna, Bordeaux, Frankfurt, Granada, Ibiza, Madrid, Mallorca, Nice, Pamplona, Santiago de Compostela, Seville, Toulouse and Valencia.
On December 23 there are 39 cancelled flights, with departures from Alicante, Bologna, Bordeaux, Frankfurt, Granada, Ibiza, Madrid, Mallorca, Menorca, Nice, Pamplona, Toulouse and Valencia.
