ARCHIVED - Fuel prices on the rise in Spain once more
Petrol and diesel are still cheaper in Spain than in much of the EU
After slowing down considerably at the end of last year, the price of petrol and diesel in Spain is once again on the rise, jumping by 0.2% in the first week of 2022.
The average price of petrol has increased to 1.479 euros compared to 1.476 euros on December 20, according to the Oil Bulletin of the European Union, while a litre of diesel has risen by 0.22% to 1.347 euros.
With these new figures, an average tank of petrol is now 23.3% more expensive than at the beginning of last year; diesel is 24.14% higher.
Despite this, the price of unleaded in Spain is still far below the EU average of 1.609 euros per litre, and diesel follows a similar trend. The main reason for Spain’s relatively low prices comes down to VAT: despite recent increases, higher taxes and levels on biodiesel, this country in general continues to have a lower tax burden than many neighbouring nations.
