ARCHIVED - Bus catches fire on the A-30 from Cartagena to Murcia
Passengers had to disembark on the roadside and watch the vehicle burn in Puerto de la Cadena
At around 5pm yesterday, Tuesday May 10, a bus going from Cartagena to Murcia was forced to make an emergency stop at exit 150 of the A-30 after it burst into flames.
The bus reportedly suffered a breakdown on the ascent to Puerto de la Cadena, which subsequently caused a fire and a small explosion that blew out the rear window of the vehicle. The driver made a brave but ultimately unsuccessful attempt to extinguish the fire, and the fire brigade was called to finish the task under the watchful eye of the more than 20 passengers who had to be evacuated to the side of the road.
After about half an hour, a replacement bus arrived to resume the passengers’ journey, though they were understandably shaken up.
“Before getting on the bus, the driver was already commenting that the vehicle was leaking some fluid,” explained Mario García, a regular passenger on the Cartagena-Murcia route. “It’s a good thing the fire brigade arrived quickly, because we had heard a couple of explosions.”
Fortunately, the fire only caused material damage and none of the passengers or the driver were harmed by the blaze.
