ARCHIVED - Cold front brings a temperature drop to Spain: weather forecast Jan 3-5
The first week in January will be mostly dry in Spain but the mercury will take a noticeable dip
Spain waved goodbye to 2022 as the warmest year since 1916 and January has also begun with a bang, breaking several temperature records of its own on the very first day.
“Both December 31, 2022 and January 1, 2023 are among the two warmest in the series. In both cases, they are very close to December 31, 2021 and January 1, 2022, when there was a warm episode that was already extraordinary and that in a year has occurred again,” confirmed Aemet spokesperson Ruben del Campo.
However, an approaching Atlantic cold front will herald change from Tuesday January 3, bringing temperatures more typical of this time of year. The front will lead to cloudy skies in the eastern part of the country and the Balearic Islands and could result in weak showers in Catalonia, the Valencian Community and the extreme south of Spain.
Galicia and the northwest can expect another rather dreary and damp day while some stormy episodes are forecast for the Canary Islands early in the day.
Daytime temperatures will drop along the entire eastern coast but will still touch a more spring-like 19 or 20ºC in parts of Murcia and Andalucia.
An anticyclone will bring predominantly dry and sunny weather throughout the country on Wednesday January 4 with the exception of Galicia, which is once more in for cloudy skies and occasional light rain, which could move south into Andalucia in the afternoon.
The maximum temperatures will drop in the Mediterranean area and rise in the rest of Spain, most noticeably in the northwest.
Extremadura and Castilla y Leon have been issued with a yellow warning for fog while Andalucia is under alert for adverse sea conditions.
Very few changes are expected on Thursday January 5 although some weak rainfall is predicted along the Andalucia coast. The day will be mostly bright and clear although some heavy morning fog is likely in the northeast.
Daytime temperatures will take a slight dip in the north and in the Canary Islands but should remain pleasantly in the high teens in the south.
