ARCHIVED - You still need to wear a face mask on flights to Spain
Spain will continue to require masks on planes but they don't have to be worn in airports
Spain’s Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, has confirmed that masks will continue to be compulsory on flights in Spain, despite the fact that the European Centre for Disease Control (ECDC) announced yesterday that they would scrap tehir recommendation to wear face coverings in airports and on planes from May 16 due to the favourable evolution of the coronavirus pandemic.
The European directive stipulates that where countries still require masks to be worn on public transport, air carriers should “encourage” their use on flights.
On April 20, Spain abolished mandatory mask-wearing indoors with a few notable exceptions: in hospital, care homes and on public transport. This means that while face coverings no longer have to be worn inside airports or on train platforms, for example, they are still compulsory on the planes and trains themselves.

“We have recently adopted measures, hand in hand with prudence and always with the unanimity of the experts and, in this case, the Interterritorial Health Council,” Minister Darias said on May 11.
She took the opportunity to specify that the European guidelines stipulate that the use of masks both in airports and on flights must align with the country’s own rules on public transport.
“Therefore,” Ms Darias explained, “in our regulations it is not compulsory [to wear a mask] either on platforms or at airports, but it is on public transport and also on flights.”
