ARCHIVED - Andalusia reports 20 deaths and 1,899 new coronavirus cases: Covid update 21 April
The authorities in the Andalusia region believe that the covid situation has plateaued
Andalusia has reported 1,899 new coronavirus cases and 20 deaths in 24 hours according to the latest data from the statistics institute on Wednesday, 21 April. This is 484 more cases than those reported on Tuesday, but 469 less than a week ago, while the number of people who lost their lives was down ten from Tuesday but up one from the 19 reported on Wednesday last week.
There were 1,588 coronavirus patients in Andalusian hospitals on Wednesday morning, five less than on Tuesday but 102 more than a week ago, and 314 of them were in ICUs, one more than on Tuesday and 24 more than a week ago. However, these figures remain far below the peaks registered in previous waves of the virus, which reached 2,708 on 30 March 2020, 3,478 on 10 November and 4,980 on 2 February.
There will be no meeting this week to discuss further restrictions and the next meeting is scheduled for next Wednesday.
In the meantime, the current restrictions established on 8 April (provincial and regional borders remain closed, a curfew from 11 pm to 6 am and gatherings of no more than six individuals outside or four inside bars, restaurants and similar places) will remain in place.
The regional health minister had explained earlier in the week that the meeting could be put back while the committee monitors the situation, as comparisons between the 14-day and 7-day accumulated incidence rates reveal that the rate at which cases are increasing has slowed. The 14-day incidence rate for the region is currently at 255.1 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, down 4.5 from Tuesday, while the 7-day rate is at 111.1 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Altogether, according to official statistics, 535,048 Andalusian residents have contracted Covid-19 since the pandemic began over a year ago. While 451,572 are reported to have recovered, 9,575 have lost their lives.
The authorities are, however, hopeful that the worst is now over as they continue to vaccinate as fast as supplies allow. By Tuesday evening, 2,325,428 vaccines had been administered in the region, and 641,811 members of the public had received both doses.
Moreover, 26,000 doses of the recently approved single-dose vaccine by Janssen were delivered on Wednesday, which will hopefully help to speed up the process.
