ARCHIVED - Rear view mirror cameras to be made mandatory in Spain
All new vehicles manufactured in Spain will be equipped with the safety feature by 2022
In recent months the traffic authorities in Spain have introduced a series of new measures which not only clarify the current driving laws but have also updated the mandatory equipment required for vehicles, such as the new warning beacons soon set to replace triangles in the event of a breakdown. Now, the DGT has announced that in the next couple of years, all vehicles will be required to have an additional safety feature – rear-view mirror cameras.
However, drivers need not rush to the garage just yet, as the DGT has confirmed this week that when the measure takes effect in 2022, it will only apply to newly manufactured vehicles, and given that Spanish roads are typically home to the oldest fleet of cars in all of Europe, it will be many years before every car is equipped with these cameras.
The idea behind the rear detection cameras is that they will make reversing safer, reducing incidences of traffic accidents and the number of people accidentally run over.
While manufactures will be the ones responsible for installing the cameras, automotive stores have naturally come up with a solution for drivers wishing to add the new technology to older vehicles, simply by attaching the new gadget over the existing rear-view mirror and installing a small camera in the back of the car. For the tech savvy, more expensive models include GPS and even night vision.
As a means of modernising driving in Spain, the DGT has established the 3.0 platform which aims to be fully operational by 2025 and will introduce such devices as a system whereby tow trucks can automatically locate a broken-down vehicle.
