1,000 euro fine for drunk driving on electric scooters in Spain
Users of electric scooters in Spain are subject to the same traffic laws as other drivers
Electric scooters are now a common sight across Spain, their convenience for zipping along streets and promenades making them an increasingly popular mode of transportation for people of all ages. However, scooters haven’t been without their issues, and the DGT has included these electric vehicles in its revised Traffic Law in order to improve road safety.
One of the novel regulations is that electric scooters are now classed as Personal Mobility Vehicles (VMP), which means that they are subject to the same rules as cars.
To this end, scooter users are required to submit to alcohol and drug tests if they are requested by Traffic officers, a fact which the DGT has recently highlighted on social media.
Los usuarios de #VMP también deben someterse a pruebas de #alcoholyotrasdrogas.

If an electric scooter driver is found to be over the alcohol limit, they will be fined the same amount as any other motorist – between 500 and 1,000 euros. Where drugs are detected in the system, the standard sanction of 1,000 euros will automatically be issued.
