ARCHIVED - 20 kilos of octopus seized in Mazarron to be donated to charity
The octopus was confiscated from the Mazarrón fishermen for being under the allowed size
Strict laws govern the practice of professional fishing in the Region of Murcia and capturing specimens under a particular size or weight is strictly prohibited, as this serves to deplete the young of many species and could wreak havoc on the balance of the ecosystem. All local catches must also pass through the fish market.
Because of the dangers, trawlers are watched closely in the municipality of Mazarrón and their boats are routinely inspected. As a result of the ‘Annual Plan for Comprehensive Control of Fishing Activities,’ one such boat was intercepted at the port this week containing 20 kilos of octopus that were all below the allowed size and should legally have been thrown back in the water.
Eagle-eyed officers from the Seprona division of the Guardia Civil also spotted a second vessel in the process of dumping its nets back in the ocean when the crew realised inspections were taking place. This boat was also found to be carrying octopus under the regulation size.
While the offending fishermen will all face hefty fines the story does have a positive spin as all of the seized fish, once certified fit for consumption, will be donated to charity.
