ARCHIVED - 2022: the warmest year in Spanish history
The “extraordinary” temperatures recorded in Spain this year are the highest in more than a century
There’s little more than a week to go until Spain welcomes a brand new year and if the current weather predictions are true then the country is set to record the hottest year in over a century.
Throughout 2022, the average temperature recorded has been 15.3ºC, which is 1.6ºC higher than any previous year since 1961. And according to Aemet’s resident expert Ruben del Campo, not only have the past 12 months been the warmest ever seen, they’re the toastiest “by far”.
“Even if we look back with climate reconstructions (starting in 1915), and although we don't have as much data as there is from 1961 but we can trust it, we see that there is no precedent for such an extraordinarily warm year for more than a century,” he summed up.
“This is something that we can be sure of because the difference compared to the previous record is so overwhelming that it is quite clear,” del Campo emphasised.
The data is perhaps not entirely surprising given the extraordinary summer of consecutive heatwaves Spain endured, but the really remarkable warm spell actually began as early as May, when practically every day registered the highest temperatures since 1950.
At the same time, while scant rainfall is good news for the tourism industry it’s not great for Spain’s agriculture and much of the country has been plagued by drought for months now. Looking at the data up to December 15, 2022 has shaped up to also be the third driest year of all time, surpassed only by 2005 and 2017.
However, there’s a fair bit of rain forecast in the next few days, particularly in the north of the country, so it’s likely that 2022 will drop a few notches. Nevertheless, del Campo is confident that year will certainly land somewhere among the ten driest years since 1961.
