ARCHIVED - 29-year-old dies from coronavirus in Murcia region
This is the youngest fatality due to Covid in the Region of Murcia since the start of the pandemic
Health authorities in the Region of Murcia have reported on Tuesday, July 20 that a 29-year-old man has died as a result of Covid, the youngest person to lose their life in the region since the pandemic began last year. This death brings the total number of fatalities to 1,610.
On Monday, deputy director of the Centre for the Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies (CCAES), María José Sierra, stressed that this fifth wave of the coronavirus pandemic is mostly affecting the younger age groups, with infection rates reaching 3,000 in the 12 to 29 age range in some autonomous communities. Currently, Navarra, Catalonia, Castilla y León, Asturias and Aragon are those with the highest incidence among young people.
In an attempt to stem the spread of Covid infections throughout Spain the vaccine drive has stepped up a gear, with just short of a million doses administered over the weekend alone, according to the Ministry of Health data published on Monday.
As a result of the latest immunization campaign, more than 50 per cent of the entire population of the country has now been fully vaccinated (24,041,017 people). This means that Spain has now become the third country in the EU to have vaccinated half its population.
The Ministry has also this week halted deliveries of the AstraZeneca Covid vaccine, stating that enough doses of the jab have already been refrigerated throughout the various autonomous communities to fully vaccinate the remaining over-60s.
