ARCHIVED - 5 million cars expected on Spanish roads this weekend as August holidays come to an end
With heavy traffic expected all weekend, there will be more police patrols and speed cameras on Spain’s roads this weekend

We are at the gates of the last weekend in August, which means that many people will be returning from their holidays over the next few days, and the General Directorate of Traffic in Spain (DGT) is expecting almost 5 million vehicles on the roads.
To try and ensure road safety – and no doubt in a ploy to try and earn a little bit of extra cash – the DGT has is deploying 15 camouflaged vans, 30 drones and 12 helicopters to monitor the state of the roads from the sky until Sunday. They also have vehicles and unmarked motorbikes that will circulate on all types of roads in order to catch speeders and others who they can fine for breaking the rules of the road.
This year, the Spanish traffic authorities have raked in more money from fines than any time in the last 10 years and odds are they will be on the lookout for lawbreakers this weekend too.

When and where will traffic be worst in Spain this weekend?
The DGT predicts that the heaviest traffic will be between 5pm and 11pm this Friday, August 26, and on Saturday between 9am and 1pm, on the main access roads to the major cities. Heavy traffic is also expected at train stations and airports.
Because of this additional flow of vehicles on the road this weekend, the DGT has established a series of regulatory measures to facilitate mobility, such as adding extra and reversible lanes on the main access roads to major Spanish cities.
In addition, they also plan to restrict the circulation of vehicles carrying dangerous goods, special transport and lorries in general and to set up recommended alternative routes to avoid areas with the highest traffic intensity.
