6 historical buildings the British built on Menorca

Spain's Menorca was under Brtitish rule for more than 70 years between 1708 and 1802

For most of the 18th century, Menorca was dependent on the main European powers following an episode in the Spanish Civil War, and under British rule for seven decades in three different phases between 1708 and 1802.

Following the ratification of the Treaty of Amiens (1802), the island returned definitively to the sovereignty of the Spanish monarchy. In between, during the Seven Years' War (1756-1763), it was occupied by the French, and from 1782 to 1798 remained temporarily under Spanish control.

However, for the rest of the century British rule prevailed, creating a period that left a profound mark on the island that is still evident today.

One of the most important vestiges of British rule is to be found in the island's architecture. The British founded Georgetown, known today Es Castell, located at the entrance to the port of Maó, which is still home to buildings constructed in the 18th century in Georgian style.

And it's not uncommon to find typical English sash windows and small balconies in some Menorcan houses, a clear example of the many 'Anglicisms' that have gradually permeated Menorcan architecture.

In terms of culture, islanders also celebrate British April Fools' Day (April 1) as opposed to the Spanish alternative which is traditionally marked on December 28.

1. Fort Marlborough (Fuerte Marloborough)

Located in the cove of Sant Esteve in the port of Maó, this fort was built by the British between 1720 and 1726 and named after General Sir John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough. Visitors are transported back in time thanks to an exhibition that charts the war sieges during the 18th century.

2. Fornells Tower (Torre de Fornells)

This British coastal defence tower was built between 1801 and 1802, and is the largest of all of the British towers on the island. It was restored and opened to the public in 2000 in a simple museum style.

3. Es Mercadel Cistern (Aljibe de es Mercadel)

Construction of this tower began in 1735 by order of Governor Sir Richard Kane. The large structure, still in use today and well preserved, was erected to supply the troops located between Maó and Ciutadella and drinking water for the town of Es Mercadal.

4. Castillo Sant Felip (Sant Felip Castle)

Located at the mouth of the port of Maó, the castle was built in the 16th century. During the British rule, it was extended until it was demolished in 1782 after the Spanish siege. What is impressive is the legacy of underground galleries made by the Spanish and British.

5. Camino de Kane (Kane Road)

Between 1712 and 1717, the British governor, Sir Richard Kane, promoted a network of roads in order to improve communication between the troops in the forts of Mahón and Ciutadella, towns and isolated rural areas. This road still bears his name to this day.

6. Torre des Castellar (Des Castellar Tower)

Located in Sa Caleta, this tower was built by the British between 1799 and 1802 with the intention of defending the coastal area near Ciutadella, as a support for the Castle of Sant Nicolau in the event of a possible enemy invasion.
