ARCHIVED - 8 ADS systems mandatory in cars in Spain from July
The driver assistance systems will be compulsory in all new cars in Spain
On top of the myriad of rules that were introduced by the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) last year and the next barrage of regulations set to come into force next month through the new Traffic Law, there is yet another change for drivers in Spain to get their heads around. As of July 2022, all newly-manufactured cars must come fitted as standard with no fewer than eight driver assistance systems (ADS).
And while this may sound excessive, it doesn’t stop there as the European Parliament intends to introduce even more safety devices in the future as technology improves.
The eight mandatory ADS systems from July
- Intelligent Speed Assistant (ISA): this system adapts the maximum speed of a vehicle to the speed limits on a particular road, preventing the driver from accelerating beyond the legal limit.
- Rear Camera with Cross-Traffic Detection: these features can detect blind spots up to a distance of 30 metres and alert drivers of oncoming vehicles.
- Involuntary Lane Change Alert (LDW): this system warns the driver that he is veering off course and leaving a lane, whether on a motorway, expressway or highway. If necessary, the system alerts the driver by means of light, acoustic or even touch technology, i.e. vibrations on the steering wheel or seat.
- Fatigue Detector: The fatigue alert system emits a signal on the instrument panel that warns the driver when he has exceeded the recommended travelling time without stopping.
- BAS and EBA Emergency Braking System: the BAS or EBA system ensures that braking is performed with the necessary intensity to stop the car, reducing the distance from the vehicle in front as much as possible. When it perceives that risk situation, the assistant comes into operation.
- Vehicle Lock with Alcohol Metre: Currently only in place for professional drivers, this system prevents the motorist from starting the vehicle if they exceed the legal alcohol limit.
- Black Box (EDR): In the event of an accident, the EDR will record all the data during the 30 seconds prior to the accident and the five seconds after.
- Rear Seat Belt Alert: this system detects if a seat is occupied via sensors and alerts the driver if a seat belt hasn’t been fastened correctly.
