A dry April in Murcia turns into a May with weather warnings for storms
Last month was the fifth driest April of the century, but the Region is now on alert for heavy rain and storms

With just 13.8ml of rainfall, it represented only 64% of the average for the month. Aemet, the State Meteorological Agency, classified it as having a “dry” rainfall pattern. The region experienced 9.6°C as the average low temperature, marking the sixth warmest since 1961, while the average monthly temperature overall of 15.5°C made it the ninth warmest in at least 65 years.
Though the month was mostly dry, it wasn’t without its extreme weather events. The region saw nine stormy days, with some intense electrical activity on April 13. The month also marked the second wettest March-April period in the region’s history, with 192.6ml accumulated. However, the contrast between April’s dryness and the recent heavy rainfall of previous years could not have been more striking.
But just as the dry spell comes to a close, the weather is turning again. Aemet has issued a yellow warning for Thursday May 8, as a storm front moves in. The warning is in effect for the Altiplano, Northwest and the Vega del Segura, where rainfall could hit up to 15mm in just one hour. The storm is expected between noon and 10pm, with a 40% to 70% chance of storms that could bring strong winds and lightning.

The forecast for tomorrow, Wednesday 7, is also a little unsettled, with the possibility of more showers, especially in the Northwest. These could even bring thunderstorms in the afternoon. While areas like the Guadalentín Valley and Campo de Cartagena should remain clear of storms, the change in weather after a few days of intense heat will no doubt catch a few people off guard.
With May now here, the weather’s unpredictability seems to be in full swing, so it’s a good idea for everyone to keep an eye on updates and stay prepared.
