ARCHIVED - A piece of history returns to the Alhambra in Granada
The Alhambra in Granada, Andalucia region is adding a recently-recovered piece of its fascinating history to the complex museum, after it left the building more than 150 years ago in the company of a romantic, travelling writer
The Alhambra museum has put a recently recovered carved wooden panel on display in an exhibition titled ‘The future of the museum: Recover and Imagine.’
The exhibition, will remain in place from 8.30 am to 9.30 pm until October 17.
The star exhibit is a piece of intricately carved panelling, which was removed from the building’s Torre de las Damas, 150 years ago when 19th century English traveller Richard Ford stayed at the palace.
Richard Ford is referred to as a "romantic travel writer" who stayed in Granada while writing a guidebook to Spain in the early 1800s, becoming one of the first people to spread information about the Alhambra to the UK. He is credited with being instrumental in bringing the glories of the palace to the attention of the public, and the Alhambra is now one of the most iconic monuments in Andalucia as well as the most instantly recognisable and visited in the region.
Ford took a piece of panelling from the Torre de las Damas as a momentum and it has remained in his family ever since until his descendants, Francis V Ford and Richard A Ford, returned it to the Board of the Alhambra and Generalife last year.
The general director of the Board, Rocio Diaz, said: “We are working both on the restitution of the piece in its original location and on a series of conferences to make it known within the scientific community.”
The research will then be put into a book about the Torre de las Damas panels.
There will also be guided visits to the Alhambra Museum from 10 am to 6 pm by prior reservation on 958027920 or by email at visitamuseo.pag@juntadeandalucia.es, while the Alhambra is also open for night visits again from Tuesdays to Saturdays in Granada.
