A week of weather contrasts: Spain forecast Sept 30-Oct 3
Heavy rain is forecast all week in northern Spain, while the south will remain dry and bright
Weather outlook on Tuesday afternoon
Spain is in for yet another week of contrasts weather-wise, with the northern extremes of the country preparing for more battering rain while the south should stay dry and sunny for the time being.
The presence of the Azores anticyclone just off Spain should almost guarantee stable weather in the southern half of the country and the Canary Islands. In the north and the Balearic Islands, on the other hand, a wave of high-altitude fronts will cause huge temperature fluctuations and plenty of showers.
According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), this coming week will be very miserable in Galicia, the entire Cantabrian coast and other parts of the north. In contrast, it will be slightly drier than normal for this time of year in the rest of Spain.
Between Monday and Wednesday, daytime temperatures will exceed 25ºC in general from Madrid down, and they’ll even shoot past 30ºCin the valleys of the Guadiana, Guadalquivir and in the southeast of the country. On Wednesday and Thursday, the mercury could easily exceed 32-34ºC in the Region of Murcia, Alicante, south of Valencia, parts of Malaga, Granada and Almeria.
Aside from the aforementioned showers and stormy episodes in the north, the rest of Spain can expect dry weather with partly cloudy or clear skies on Monday September 30.
Intervals of low morning clouds are also expected in the northern half of the Mediterranean coasts and inland southeast, but these should clear early enough.
Temperatures will rise across the board but the upswing will be more noticeable in the east.
A front is expected to pass through Spain and the Balearic Islands on Tuesday October 1, leaving cloudy or overcast skies with rain in Galicia that will tend to spread throughout the day to the Cantabrian area, the upper Ebro and the north in general.
Another overcast morning should give way to a generally bright day in the rest of the country.
The mercury will continue to climb along the Mediterranean and Cantabrian coasts, but it could take a slight dip along the Atlantic.
On Wednesday October 2, daytime temperatures will continue to climb sharply in the south, hitting the mid-30s in parts of Malaga, Murcia and Sevilla.
However, an approaching Atlantic low will leave very heavy rain and storms in its wake in northern Spain and the Balearics. This rain could spread in a much weaker way to the rest of the country – in fact, only the extreme south of the country will be spared, and even here the skies will likely be mostly cloudy.
The weather should settle down quite a bit on Thursday October 3, although there’s still a good chance of rain in Galicia and Cantabria.
For a change, the temperatures will tend to rise in the Canary Islands and the northwest, while taking a dip elsewhere.
